The Fallout Shelter opened its doors in 1985 at 2 S. West Street in downtown Raleigh. [www.wral.com] DJ Steve Halberstadt began spinning industrial music on Monday nights at The Fallout Shelter starting around 1989, after his own industrial goth dance parties in his apartment complex clubhouse drew unexpectedly large crowds. [www.wral.com] The Fallout Shelter's attendance peaked around 1992 and began to decline around 1995 as grunge music became the more popular scene. [www.wral.com] When the Fallout Shelter's industrial and goth DJ nights ended, that programming moved to Legends nightclub. [www.wral.com] FLEX nightclub later took over the basement space, providing a gathering space for Raleigh's LGBTQIA+ community. [www.wral.com] According to FLEX's website as cited by the article, FLEX planned to reopen in a new space in autumn 2022. [www.wral.com] More than 250 people attended a farewell reunion event at the original site in August 2022, more than three decades after the venue's industrial dance nights began. [www.wral.com] Halberstadt described the inclusive character of the crowd the Fallout Shelter drew. [www.wral.com] The building at 2 S. West Street housing The Fallout Shelter and FLEX played a major role in Raleigh's 1980s and 90s industrial and goth scene, and more recently housed FLEX nightclub, serving Raleigh's LGBTQIA+ community. [www.wral.com] In August 2022, hundreds gathered at the site to say goodbye ahead of the building's planned demolition. [www.wral.com] Patrons who frequented the Fallout Shelter in the 1990s went on to patronize Legends Nightclub, which continued hosting industrial and goth nights through the 1990s and 2000s. [www.wral.com] The City of Raleigh's LGBTQIA+ historic places survey lists "Flex / Fallout Shelter" at 2 S. West St. as a 1990s-era Bar/Club site. [engage.raleighnc.gov] The survey describes the site as serving "full spectrum clientele, including drag queens, go-go boys, and leather daddies," and notes that prior to Flex, "the punk-style Fallout Shelter operated here." [engage.raleighnc.gov] In the survey results shown, this site received 64% of respondent votes for inclusion among the city's top 20 LGBTQIA+ historic places for further research. [engage.raleighnc.gov] INDY Week's November 2019 guide put the Triangle's queer nightlife at seven rooms across three cities: four in Raleigh — Legends, Ruby Deluxe, Flex and The District — two in Durham, the Pinhook and The Bar, and one in Chapel Hill, Nightlight. The guide says it does not encompass everywhere LGBTQ people gather, and notes that bars have historically been central gathering spaces for queer folks. [INDY Week] Flex, a basement dive at 2 West South Street, catered to a predominantly cis gay male clientele, ran karaoke most nights, and on Thursdays held what the guide calls its "iconic Trailer Trash Prize Nights, a drag review with prize giveaways throughout the evening".
