What is known
O.Henry's, popularly known as Asheville's oldest gay bar, opened on October 13, 1976, at 59 Haywood Street, initially called the Skylight Room. [www.ashevillehistory.org] The bar began playing disco music after 8pm sometime in 1977 and gained an unofficial reputation as a safe space for the gay community, filling up on Friday and Saturday nights, before being rebranded O.Henry's in 1978 by drawing on Asheville's literary heritage. [www.ashevillehistory.org] After After Dark closed, O.Henry's helped fill the resulting void, and patrons began bar-hopping between O.Henry's and the nearby Cabaret Act Two at 45 Cherry Street to see drag shows.
