The building at 511 E. 36th Street has previously carried the names Astor Theatre and Astor Art Theatre. It seats 446 on one screen. [Cinema Treasures] The entry says the Astor was built in 1945 in an area of north Charlotte that had three textile mills, and opened on 1 March 1948 with Gary Cooper in The Plainsman. A grand-opening advertisement in the Charlotte Observer of 29 February 1948 is cited for that date. [Cinema Treasures] It was a segregated house. The entry states it plainly, and the trade press of the day classified it as such. [Cinema Treasures] A commenter citing the 1950 Film Daily Yearbook records how the industry itself listed it. [Cinema Treasures] The Film Daily of 2 April 1948 described the room as a conversion rather than new construction, which is at odds with the entry's own 1945 build date. [Cinema Treasures] In early 1960 one commenter's father ran the Astor briefly on mostly B pictures, and booked Bill Monroe and his bluegrass band there once. The commenter remembers an interior that had once been elegant, with a carved ceiling and a red velvet curtain drawn over the screen. [Cinema Treasures] By the 1960s the area was in steep decline and the Astor showed X-rated films as the Astor Art Theatre, with a topless bar next door. Its own newspaper advertising of the period called it "The Carolina's Most Unusual Theater". [Cinema Treasures] After the adult-cinema years the theatre closed, a church took the building, and it closed again. In the 1990s, as galleries moved into the area, it was restored as the Neighborhood Theatre. [Cinema Treasures] A few aging blocks of a declining working-class neighborhood revived from the textile mill era as Charlotte's home-grown arts district: by the mid-1990s galleries and off-beat music venues had replaced empty storefronts, nightlife began to flourish, and the acronym "NoDa" took hold. [UNC Charlotte Urban Institute] The president of the NoDa Neighborhood and Business Association, Jacob Horr, said in 2020 that North Davidson Street is no longer lined with art galleries and the monthly gallery crawls have stopped, but that art in the neighborhood had expanded rather than gone. [UNC Charlotte Urban Institute] The church survives as a rare and tangible reminder of the Brooklyn neighborhood — one of the few structures left after the urban renewal campaigns of the 1960s and 1970s — and is one of Charlotte's best examples of Gothic Revival. Gantt Center stands in the area once occupied by the historic Brooklyn neighborhood, and takes its design inspiration from the Myers Street School that stood at the heart of old Brooklyn: the school's prominent exterior stair configuration gave it the name Jacob's Ladder, and the Center restates it in modern form with stairs and escalators carrying visitors up to the second-floor lobby from both ends of the building while framing the central glass atrium.
